Yes - it’s true. We, the humble Horizon Watersports team, have witnessed the world’s biggest car boot sale. In fact, not only did we witness it, we were a part of it!

(Was it really the worlds biggest? - Who knows!)

But it was certainly BIG. There were over 100 cars there, which far exceeds any other car boot sales that we have attended. This event was in Carshalton, near Sutton, South London. It was a great event, with a steady flow of visitors to our stand. The fact there were so many cars may have been a bad thing sales wise, because of course every stand tends to have similar things to sell, but having so many cars and visitors gave the place a great atmosphere. It was a really fun morning.

The fun started at 5:00am (OK, so that bit wasn’t so much fun). We were up at 5:00am loading the car and were allowed in to the event at 6:00am. Even at 6:00am on the dot there was huge queue of cars waiting to get in. Once in we had until 7:00am to set up. At 7:00am the first visitors were allowed in and people started to buy things almost straight away. The first person to buy from us took a bundle of CD’s.

We had so much stuff to sell, we went with a new tactic this time and made nearly everything on our stand either £1 or 50p. To be able to shout out that everything was under a £1,  made it easier to attract people in to have a browse. We placed two big bags of clothes at the front of the stand and a sign saying – “ Please take a look in our RUMBLE JUMBLE bags of JOY – everything only £1”.

Throughout the morning we took it in turns to promote various items – such as Paul with the hairbrush set , Maz with the dress and Ben with the juggling balls!

By 11:30 we were just short of £100 and so with a final push decided to try and break the £100 barrier. Our lovely elephants were one of the last things to sell and helped us get to a final total of £115 by mid-day.  Just before it was time to pack up and head for lunch.

We were really really pleased with £115.  All the money goes to Sail4Cancer and Horizon Wastersports Instructor Training. Sail4Cancer raise money to support cancer research and also to send cancer patients and their families on sailing experiences, as a form of respite and recovery.  Horizon Watersports Instructor Training offers free sailing and windsurfing instructor training courses to disadvantaged 18 – 24 year olds.

We are very grateful to everyone that donated items for us to sell and to everyone that came to see us in Carshalton. Thank you. If you would like to donate to either of these great causes, please contact Every penny helps!
