Horizon Hits Hastings

November 14, 2016

Having been back in the UK for a month, the 5th of November seemed the perfect time for a staff get together. We could all enjoy each other's company again and watch some fireworks at the beach. A month in the UK meant we had just enough time for all of our tans to fade and for everyone to succumb to the need for a conventional UK hair cut. It's fair to say that only Remi had managed to maintain the beach look!

Each year after the summer season we host our staff 'debrief'. Our debrief is essentially a weekend away - to round off the summer, to look to the future, and to simply enjoy some social time together (with the added bonus of nobody having to work the next day). Last year we enjoyed a weekend in Weymouth, home of the Sailing Olympics in 2012. We were even lucky enough to be treated to a tour of the Weymouth National Sailing Academy by Sally, Horizon's good friend and supporter, who works there.

As always the fun, social side of things is important to Team Horizon so we made sure we had plenty of food, drink and games to keep us busy. However, in addition to all the fun there is also a serious side to our weekends away. We want to improve every year and we only do that by reflecting and planning, and getting the whole team involved.

This year we headed to Hastings to stay in a house right on the beach. The weather was amazing, which meant we could enjoy walking along the beach to the new pier in the sunshine. We had fun being asked to have a team photo taken to go on the Hastings Pier website. We also enjoyed a firework display which was right on the beach in front of us, followed by goody bags and then a full-full-full English breakfast in the morning!

During the day we took time to reflect on the successes of the season and how we can work as a team to improve and continue moving Horizon Watersports in the right direction. This year, as well as discussing company goals, finance information and charity aims, our presentation was particularly focused on the instructor training scheme. We believe our training scheme (which offers free RYA instructor courses to disadvantaged 18 - 24 year olds) is now at a point where the full product is 100% tried and tested. And...most importantly... successful! We have now run RYA Sailing Instructor, RYA Windsurfing Instructor and RYA Multi Activity Courses.

We believe this winter is the right time to seek permanent funding and enable this training to become a product in it's own right, helping many more young adults. We are very excited about where this may take the training program when we find a suitable sponsor. If you can offer any ideas for donations or sponsorship please do get in touch.

One of the main reasons we host these weekends is to show our staff that, whilst we always recognise the help and support that our guests and friends give us, we also recognise the hard work of our team. We are so lucky to have such a great team of staff who are all such positive, fun and professional people to be around and to work with.

A huge thank you to them all for everything they have done this year to get Horizon Watersports through its second successful summer.

Aurora, Jake, Katie, Remi, Daz, Hannah, Bailey, Postles, Claire, Brabbs and John...we are truly grateful for all you do for Horizon Watersports and I am sure all of our guests would agree you really are a brilliant team. Tripadvisor is a clear testament to that.

Thank you all for 2016 and we can't wait for more of the same in 2017!!
