Zero to HERO

July 3, 2016

Most of our newly qualified windsurf instructors from our 5 week training course have left Nidri now and the centre’s feeling a lot quieter without them. They all worked extremely hard over the 5 weeks to work their way up to being windsurf instructors. They not only learned to windsurf, but also gained a first aid qualification, learned to drive a powerboat, learned how to structure RYA courses and learned how to give presentations so that they can teach people the theory behind windsurfing in an interactive and exciting way. Other modules included: Safety Systems Afloat, Using a VHF Radio and Dealing with Casualties Afloat. The whole group worked really hard and it was great to see how well they worked as a team throughout their 5 weeks in Greece,  learning to live and work as a team is a key skill in this industry and of course in life as a whole!

It wasn’t all hard work though - there were also lots of social events in the evenings and on days off. Rum club on the beach to support our good causes was always popular, as were evening meals with the rest of the team – from sit down dinners to the cheap but delicious gyros, an essential part of any trip to Greece. Day off activities included renting cars to tour the island, snorkelling, cycling to the waterfalls just outside of Nidri, or coming down to the centre to practice their new-found windsurfing skills. From time to time there was even time to relax and sunbathe!

We are pleased to say that 3 of our new trainees have now joined the team with Horizon. Jake Gallagher is joining as us as a windsurf instructor, it’s now his second week and he’s already run 2 windsurf courses which our guests have absolutely loved! Katie Davis has joined us having completed her dinghy instructor after doing her training with us. She has also been a hit with the guests and is currently out on the water running a race with her level one students! Claire McGinniss is also joining the team as a company rep. We think her bubbly and chatty personality will be perfect for the role and she will be able to use her windsurf and sailing knowledge to keep Jake and Katie nice and busy! Welcome to the team all three!

Our other newly qualified instructors are in various locations around the world from Scotland to China using their qualifications to start new careers in the watersports industry. We hope that the skills they learned here at Horizon will set them up to be fantastic instructors who will keep on improving. Good luck and thanks for a fantastic 5 weeks!
