As we enter May and our opening day gets closer, we’ve been reflecting on how far we have come in just one short year. When we closed our doors last October and put the kit to bed for the winter, it was yet another new first for us as we took on the challenge of staying afloat whilst the centre was shut between November and May. Steve stayed in Nidri to look after the Greek side of things, whilst Maz and Aurora headed back to the UK to work from there.
Fortunately, as soon as we announced spaces for our Instructor Training Courses in October, we started to receive a huge amount of interest and have been able to expand the programme from 6 trainees to 24 for 2016. We received a steady flow of enquiries throughout the winter, and have young adults joining us from the UK, Sweden, Holland and Bulgaria as a result. It’s really exciting for us to be able to offer this programme alongside our ‘normal’ activities, as we are encouraging more people to pursue a career in watersports.
This has always been one of our core company aims: to make careers in watersports more accessible. With a larger programme this year, supported by our year round fundraising events, we are pleased to say that almost half of the spaces we have booked are FREE courses for disadvantaged 18 to 24 year olds. We have worked hard to ensure that deserving young adults are reaping the benefits of what we are offering.
In addition to instructor courses we started receiving our first advanced bookings, as people started to think ahead to their summer holidays during the dreary winter months. The bookings have been really varied, ranging from SUP hire, to packages, RYA courses, gift vouchers and powerboating. It is really exciting for us to know that people are thinking of Horizon when considering their holidays, and are eager to get their watersports booked. Holidays with watersports are what we are about, after all!
We are so excited about the summer ahead and feel really confident that we have an exceptionally strong team and something different to offer every person who visits us.
