My 5 Favourite Things in Nidri

June 19, 2015

1.       Views of the Islands from the beach

2.       Kayaking and watersports

3.      Boat trips

4.       The waterfalls

5.      The variety of food options

1.       Views of the Islands from the beach

Nidri high street is a busy place both day and night.  During the day it is full of people and traffic.  In the evenings it is traffic-free allowing you space to stroll up and down and look at the variety of shops.  The hustle and bustle is fun to be a part of, enjoying the long summer evenings. However, I prefer to spend most of my time in the beach areas of Nidri where you get fantastic views of the Ionian islands. The beach at the Lefkas Town end of Nidri is idyllic and peaceful…a million miles from the hub of the main street. Looking out to sea the view is stunning. If you stay in one of the hotels on the beach you can wake up to the view of the islands every day!

2.       Kayaking and Water sports

From the beach area you can hire equipment to go sailing, wind-surfing, paddle-boarding or kayaking.  You can also have lessons in all these sports.  I love to kayak here as you can paddle from headland to headland or go around the little islands.  You get a great feeling of freedom out on the water looking back at the land. You can also join guided kayaks trips. All of the watersports are run by a local company called Horizon Watersports.

3.       Boat Trips

From the quayside you can take a ferry to Meganisi or go on day trips around the Ionian Islands.  Many of these boat trips stop at beaches for swimming and snorkelling as well as providing you with a commentary about the islands that you are sailing past. The ferry to Meganisi runs regularly and so for just a few Euro you can island hop for breakfast and be home for lunch!

4.       Waterfalls

I love the water and swim in the sea a lot! But I have also had a dip in the natural pool at the foot of Nidri waterfalls - it is so cool and refreshing.  The falls are a short walk or bike ride inland from the town. The amble to the falls is all part of the experience of seeing more of Greece. You can hire bikes from a local company called Get Active. Take a camera as the waterfalls and the rock formations are impressive. There is a lovely taverna at the foot of the path where you can take refreshment to revive you after the short climb up to the falls. They have an excellent selection of smoothies and juices!

5.       Variety of

At the end of a day enjoying the water-based activities that Nidri provides, you can relax over good food and drink in one of the many tavernas situated throughout the town.  I especially like the ones that line the quayside. Here you get to watch the boats coming and going, and enjoy the view across to the islands. Whether you want a hearty sit down meal or a quick bite to eat – Nidri does seem to cater for everyone. I can certainly recommend trying the creperie!
